History

The Hackney Wagon Company was founded in 1854 when Willis Napolean Hackney and Caleb Lee Parker purchased Pomeroy Clark’s coach and wagon factory in Rocky Mount and moved it to Wilson. The company changed names several times in the late nineteenth century. In 1871 when Hackney purchased the land on the north side of Nash Street, he erected this structure first and by the late-nineteenth century had expanded to cover the southeastern half of the entire block. In 1885 it was considered one of the few large manufacturers of carriages and wagons in the southern states that was in a remarkably prosperous condition and marketed its products through the Carolinas and Virginia. The present complex of buildings – primarily the showrooms and finishing areas – date from 1885.

The three-story brick building at 215-217 East Nash was constructed in 1884-1885 and is the oldest of the Hackney Buildings. The first floor was originally used for storage; the second floor for varnishing, painting, and trimming; and, the third floor for additional storage. The building was vacated by the Hackney Company as early as 1913 when the Sanborn maps indicate a clothing store at 215 East Nash and offices at 217 East Nash. By 1922, 215 E. Nash was occupied by Graham Winstead and Son Stationers and 217 E. Nash was occupied by Efird’s Department Store. In the early 1930s, the two stores were combined into one and occupied by the J. C. Penney Company from c. 1936 to c. 1965 and by the Western Auto Store from 1967 until recently. The upper floors have been used primarily for storage.

In 1922, the facade of the building was renovated to give the nine storefronts on Nash Street, which had been constructed at various times between 1885 and 1922, a cohesive appearance.
